It’d been an…interesting meeting. Ty Walsh was just as eccentric, if not more so, than I’d expected him to be. But it was done—the contract had been signed, and he’d agreed to put up the money needed start filming, all in exchange for a reasonable percentage of box office and streaming sales receipts.
It was done. As the two of us stepped into the huge suite in downtown San Francisco that I’d booked for the night, I felt like I was walking on air.
“It’s done!” said Sam, throwing up her arms in victory as she made her way deeper into the massive, luxurious suite, the city at night twinkling through the window. “I can’t fucking believe it!”
She plopped onto the couch, letting her head hang back.
My eyes flicked over to the wet bar, specifically to a bottle of Louis Roederer Cristal Brut. Things had been so busy with Sam that I’d barely had time to eat, let alone enjoy a glass of anything. But that moment felt like the perfect time to crack open a bottle.
“You really can’t believe it?” I asked.
“You can?” she asked. “Through that whole meeting I felt like Ty was on the verge of mentally checking out.”
“Sounds like you’ve never dealt with rich, eccentric types,” I said, taking the cool, gold-colored bottle into my hand and setting it on the bar along with a couple of glasses. “That’s pretty par for the course—their brains are always in ten different places at once.”
“Then again,” she said, “when I saw just how…extensive his Quiksilver merch collection was, I realized we might’ve hit gold.”
“No kidding,” I said. “I was ready for action figures and posters. I wasn’t ready for a life-sized body pillow.”
She laughed. “Don’t even want to think about what he does with that.”
I opened the bottle, a satisfying “pop” echoing through the suite and catching Sam’s eye.
“Bubbly?” she asked with a smile.
“Obviously.” I grinned.
She raised her finger toward the bottle. “Now,” she said, “I don’t know much about wine, but I know enough to know that stuff’s not cheap. Especially with the hotel upcharge.”
I waved my hand through the air.
“Sam,” I said. “We just secured financing for the movie. That means that this thing’s actually going to happen. And I couldn’t have done it without you. So, if that’s not an occasion to celebrate, I don’t know what is.”
I poured the amber-colored wine into the two glasses, the bubbles hissing and rising to the top.
“OK,” she said. “You talked me into it.”
I flashed her a grin and stepped over. Glasses in hand, I sat down on the sofa next to her and handed one over.
“To what?” she asked, raising her glass.
“To The Bakersfield Bride, of course,” I said.
The two of us tapped the rims of our glasses and sipped our drinks.
Damn, it was some good stuff—sweet and rich and fizzy. Definitely worth the…well, I didn’t really want to think about that then.
“You know,” I said. “I didn’t have a single doubt that we were going to come out on top today.
